159 = The Church of St. Ann
St. Anne's Church by Lion's (St.
Stephen's) Gate
This beautiful church, according to the tradition, stands
over-the house of St. Anne, the Virgin Mary's mother, where Mary was born.
It is one of the finest examples of a preserved Crusader art. The Crusaders
rebuilt the church, which we see today, and they embellished the walls
with frescoes. The church measures 34 m in length and 19.50 m in width,
it is divided into three aisles. Saladin turned the place into a school
of theology and the place became known as it is to this day by the name
Salahiyeh.
Pool of Bethesda
Next to the church is the Pool of Bethesda, an archaeological
excavation of an early Roman pool where Jesus healed a crippled man
(St. John 5: 1). Please see ancient Jerusalem map at the maps
page.
160 = The mount of Olives from the Temple Mount.
Mount of Olives
Outside the Old City Eastern wall and Lion's gate lay
Kidron Valley and the Mount of Olives, a 2655 foot hill. Named after the
many olive trees that thrived here at one time (a few representative trees
can still be seen) this is also where the Last Judgement is supposed to
take place.
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost
is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,
and in all Jedea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld,he was taken up,
and a cloud received him out of their sight. Then two men stood by them
in white apparel Which also said, ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing
up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven,
Shall so come in lide manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called
Olives - Mount of Olives - which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
Acts. 1:8-12
